Night time casting and swivel breaks

August 29, 2011

I did my first night time field practice today. Very interesting casting in the pitch dark and trying consistently to hit the same spot at 50mtrs. I used two glow sticks to mark the front of the landing area and a glow stick on the ball. Fortunately, I will have spotlights on the night of the actual event. The glow stick on the ball will allow me to track the flight of the ball as it flies above the spot lights. I had my first swivel breakage too. I am definitely going to have to go bigger and stronger swivels. The ones I used were probably size 10.

Reeling it in

August 29, 2011

I did a bit of time on the field today - strong south-Easter blowing and cold. I'm sure looking forward to summer.
I'm sure there is a scientific way to calculate the number of revolutions of the reel handle required to reel in 50mtrs of line but it is beyond me. I physically counted 63 full revolutions. Now you know that I love the maths and numbers of this whole thing so listen to this. 2000 Casts = 126 000 revolutions of the reel handle - that's what I'll be doing on the day.

During my training building up to the event, If I was reeling in every time I cast, that would be 26000 x 63 = 1 638 000 revolutions of the reel handle - Shimano I hope you trust your product to stand up to the rigors of those kind of numbers.

Powerball

August 29, 2011

My family and the time send with them is very precious to me. So when I started thinking through this record attempt, I had to take family into consideration. The single biggest challenge I had to overcome was how to get through the training - up to 2600 casts a week without taking the time away from my family. They say that necessity is the mother of all inventions and that certainly was the case when I came up with the idea to attach a bungee to a sawn off butt section of a rod. I was able to attach the bungee to a fixed point and can now stand and "cast" while watching tv with my wife.

The one problem Isat with until about a week ago was how to train up the muscles to endure the hours of reeling that I will need to be doing over the 24hrs. My first attempt at a solution involved tying a line to the spool - as we would normally do - and fixing it to the first eye of the rod. With the drag set loose, I could reel and reel and reel. The only problem was naturally the noise... [More]

The day I let the Terminators down

August 15, 2011

When Schalk sent me two 10ft one piece Terminators, they must have been made for someone else since they had names on them.  Henceforth the rods that I will be using will be known as Neels and Kobus.

Tuesday saw me spend a few hours at J Dam, my first opportunity to put the rods to the test.  A couple of 5-6kg class all caught on Kobus were my reward.

Saturday saw the club back at J Dam for our monthly club competition so I was all fired up and ready to take the fish on again.  Peg draws and mother nature had different ideas in mind.  Aside form one run and strike, I lost the fish.  I was left for the rest of the day watching my rods and out the box Shimano 6000 reels glint in the sun, waiver in the wind and gather rain water.  Yes as you've no doubt guessed, a typical Cape Town day with all four seasons in one eight hour period.

It felt to me like two thorougbred race horses, saddled up and caught in the starting gate whilst the rest of the field galloped to the finidhing line.

10 weeks to go

August 11, 2011

I can't believe how quickly the time is passing.  My training continues full steam and I am really beginning to feel confident about the task ahead.

The first press release hit the newspapers today albeit the false BayEcho with a very small entry.  I have already had one call in connection from someone looking to join a fishing club.

I met today with the folk from the Durbanville Kinderhuis who are very excited about the event.  They are especially keen about the idea that funds raised will be ring-fenced specifically for the development of fishing amongst the kids in the home.  At last count, there were 39 boys and girls who expressed an interest in getting involved with fishing as a sport.

Preparation

July 14, 2011

I was asked on a thread on extremeangler.co.za about the physical and mental preparation; below is what I wrote on that thread:

Aside from the physical and psychological preparation, what takes more time and effort than anything else is the organisation.

That aside, from a psychological point of view, I go to bed with a psychologist every night, sleep like a baby - that is I wake up every four hours screaming - LOL.  Seriously though, having set myself a target of 2000 casts over the 24 hours I have broken that down into bite size pieces that I can mentally compute.  I am working on roughly 84 casts per hour. 21 per 15 minutes etc.  While practicing, which I'll get to in a sec, I practice in sets of 84 - mentally I then tie that into an hour of casting on the day. I will be wearing an I-pod which carries about 30hours of my all time favourite music - I listen to...

Good news

July 14, 2011

I have got all the necessary permissions from the farmer to open this thing up to more visitors.  The farmer has even said that he will demarcate and mark parking areas for the additional vehicles.  I am so pleased!!!
